Intent
We strive to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena and a love of Science, where questioning and an exploratory attitude is at the heart of learning.  Through Science, we aim to give all our children some understanding of the world around them and teach them essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science.

At Faith Primary Academy, we are committed to nurturing a deep and profound appreciation for Science among our pupils. Our intent is to deliver a high-quality Science curriculum that:

  • Engages Curiosity: We foster a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world, encouraging pupils to formulate questions and seek their own answers through scientific inquiry.
  • Promotes Understanding: Our curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils develop a strong foundational understanding of key scientific concepts, principles, and theories across biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • Connects Learning to Life: We aim to make Science relevant and relatable by connecting scientific concepts to real-world applications, thereby preparing our pupils to understand and tackle contemporary challenges.
  • Encourages Enquiry and Critical Thinking: Through a hands-on, experimental approach, we encourage pupils to develop skills in scientific enquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving, ensuring they become confident and independent learners.

Implementation
All children are encouraged to develop and use a range of skills including planning investigations, predicting how things will behave, observing, analysing results and rationally explaining the results.  Speaking and listening encourages children to explore scientific vocabulary but also share and develop ideas with others.  An emphasis is placed on working scientifically and we therefore, adopt a very practical approach to teaching and learning in this subject where possible.

Teachers in Key Stage One follow the Rising Stars scheme and in Key Stage Two, teachers follow the HEP Science Curriculum.

The children study topics relating to the four main themes:

  1. Working Scientifically
  2. Life processes and Living things
  3. Materials and their properties
  4. Physical processes

Each topic is revisited at different levels as the children progress through the school.

Impact
The effectiveness of our Science curriculum at Faith Primary Academy is evidenced through:
Enthusiasm for Science: Pupils display a keen interest and enthusiasm for Science, pupil voice shows that children enjoy science and are excited to join in with practical experiments.
Use of Vocabulary: Pupils demonstrate a good use of scientific vocabulary within their science lessons due to our high expectations of teaching and applying newly learned vocabulary.
Pre and post assessments: Pupils complete a KWL grid at the beginning and end of a topic to show their prior knowledge and then compare it to what they have learned at the end of a topic. Our post assessments, that are completed at the end of each topic, also show the knowledge that children have acquired throughout each topic.
