Our Vision
Intent
At Faith Primary Academy, the intent for our Geography teaching is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that fosters a deep understanding of the world, its diverse cultures, landscapes, and environments. The intent is to inspire curiosity about the world and develop key geographical skills such as map reading, data analysis, and critical thinking. The intent is clearly outlined in the school’s curriculum, designed to challenge and engage pupils of all abilities, ensuring progression in geographical knowledge and skills from EYFS through to Key Stage 2, with clear links to real-world experiences.
Implementation
Our long term planning throughout the school ensures coverage of the National Geography curriculum. Geography at Faith is taught in ‘topics’ throughout the year. The subject is taught over three half terms per year in Years 1, 2 and 6, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum, with Year 1 and 2 using the Rising Stars Scheme of learning. In KS2, each topic will be taught over a half term using the Opening Worlds scheme of learning, focusing on enhancing the geographical knowledge and skills of each child in depth.
At Faith, we have identified the key knowledge and skills of each topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each year group across the school. Pupils are encouraged to develop geographical skills in lessons and are challenged by a curriculum, which allows a local and global understanding of our lives and the processes within it. At Faith, we have high expectations of pupils and therefore, pupils are regularly assessed during lessons and following a unit of work. In addition, adaptive teaching will take place to ensure that all pupils can access the planned lessons.
Impact
The impact of our Geography curriculum is measured through a range of different strategies:
- Lesson observations
- Monitoring of Geography books
- Learning walks
- Pupil voice
The impact of Geography at Faith Primary is evident in pupils’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes towards the subject. Pupils demonstrate an understanding of geographical concepts and can apply their knowledge to a range of contexts. They show curiosity about the world and a respect for different cultures and environments. The children’s knowledge and understanding are assessed against the 2014 National Curriculum statements for Geography. This is both ongoing, to inform future planning, and summative to share with staff, leaders and parents. This ensures lessons are well matched to the needs of the children, and by the end of each key stage, content within the National Curriculum is covered to prepare pupils for the next phase. It is our aim at Faith that all children make good progress and achieve the end of key stage expectations in Geography.
