Our Vision
Intent
At Faith Primary Academy, our intent for the teaching of English is to provide a rich and varied curriculum that promotes a love for language, literature, and communication. We aim to develop pupils’ spoken language, reading, writing, and vocabulary across all subject areas in a way that is engaging, inclusive, and culturally diverse. Our curriculum is designed to foster a deep understanding of the English language and inspire creativity and critical thinking among all learners. We are a Ready Steady Write school and use this as a scaffold for learning from EYFS to Year 6.
Implementation
To achieve our intent, we have implemented a structured and progressive English curriculum that is tailored to the needs and abilities of our pupils through the use of Ready Steady Write. We ensure that high-quality texts from a range of genres and cultures are at the heart of our teaching, enabling pupils to immerse themselves, analyse, interpret, and respond thoughtfully orally and in writing to literature. Our skilled teachers utilise a variety of teaching strategies, including explicit instruction, modelling, group work, and independent practice, to support the development of pupils’ language and literacy skills. Sentence accuracy is a key tool used to develop children’s vocabulary and editing skills.
Furthermore, we place a strong emphasis on promoting speaking and listening skills through class discussions, debates, drama activities, and presentations. This not only enhances pupils’ communication abilities but also boosts their confidence and self-expression. In addition, we incorporate regular opportunities for pupils to develop their writing skills across different genres and purposes, providing meaningful feedback and support to help them refine their writing craft.
Moreover, we integrate a focus on vocabulary development throughout the curriculum, explicitly teaching key vocabulary and encouraging pupils to use precise and sophisticated language in their spoken and written communication. By embedding literacy skills across all subjects, we create a cohesive learning experience that reinforces the importance of English in all aspects of education.
Impact
The impact of our English curriculum is evident in the progress and achievements of our pupils. Through rigorous assessment and tracking, we consistently monitor individual development and adjust teaching strategies to meet the needs of every child. Our pupils demonstrate a deepening understanding of language conventions, comprehension strategies, and writing techniques, leading to improved outcomes in reading, writing, and spoken language.
Furthermore, our pupils exhibit a growing proficiency and confidence in expressing themselves verbally and through writing, with many showcasing a love for reading and a curiosity for exploring new texts. The development of a broad and sophisticated vocabulary equips our pupils with the language skills necessary to excel academically and communicate effectively in a variety of contexts.
Overall, the impact of our English provision is reflected in the positive attitudes towards learning, the evident progress in language proficiency, and the holistic development of our pupils as confident and articulate communicators. Through our engaging and dynamic teaching , we empower our pupils to become lifelong learners who appreciate the richness and power of the English language.
